We clattered through rivers in old battered Humvees driven by a pair of ex-military guides who described anything great as “100 percent,” watched the sun set over the bush while troops of baboons passed by, and grilled steaks the size of encyclopedias outside a lodge with more taxidermy than you can shake an N.R.A. card at. I will never forget that stuff.”
