Open Positions

FEATURES EDITOR (New York, NY)

InsideHook is currently looking for a full-time Features Editor to join our growing content team.

The Features Editor will work closely with the Editor in Chief to establish and maintain InsideHook’s voice as we amplify our content offerings in the features, news and commentary space.

The ideal candidate will have experience recruiting and managing freelance talent, as well as pitching, writing and editing short- and longform content across a variety of men’s lifestyle topics, including but not limited to: politics, current events, technology, health, finance, business, sexuality, social justice, culture and pop culture, books, science, archeology and adventure, especially w/r/t the intersection of those topics and the more nebulous genre of “men’s lifestyle” content.

In other words, we are looking for an editor who can write, assign and develop stories in those verticals through the lens of how they directly impact the lives of men in contemporary America, and develop a great stable of contributing correspondents to help them achieve that. Think the style and voice of New Journalism, but tailored to the zeitgeist of 2019.

Responsibilities

  • Manage editorial projects small and large, from ideation to execution to distribution
  • Assign, top-edit and proofread daily news and longer feature stories as pertains to the content expansion detailed above, ensuring that InsideHook’s unique perspective and voice are evident throughout
  • Pitch and write your own editorial features as needed and/or time allows
  • Analyze relevant metrics and report on results thereof, ensuring a data-driven approach to improving on-site traffic and engagement across all distribution platforms (email, social, news aggregators, etc.)
  • Work with Editor in Chief to manage freelance editors to program a robust, topically relevant editorial calendar both on the website and across our email properties
  • Provide constructive feedback at every stage of the editorial process to ensure not only compelling, clean narratives and copy, but also to help junior staff members grow as writers, curators and editors
  • Maintain House Style guide and communicate changes/guidelines to the editorial team as needed

Requirements

  • At least 5 years experience working in a fast-paced, adaptable editorial environment
  • A passion for creating content and helping our readers live fuller lives
  • Exceptional writing, editing and proofreading skills
  • A deep interest in men’s lifestyle topics, especially w/r/t to news, politics, finance and pop culture
  • A proven track record for writing compelling, smart display copy for web and social — appealing to both humans and bots
  • The ability to shepherd many formats of web-based narrative (shortform, longform, captions, ad copy, graphics) from ideation to publish
  • Experience recruiting and managing freelance writers
  • Working knowledge of CMS tools (Wordpress or similar), Google Suite and analytics platforms (Google Analytics, Parse.ly)
  • Ability to stay organized, meet deadlines, balance priorities, and work well under pressure
  • Strong leadership skills and the proven ability to inspire and manage a team; adaptability and collaboration are hallmarks of our editorial process
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Applicant should live in or around New York City
