They’ll be facing off against one another in Vegas over Thanksgiving, but apparently Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson won’t be pairing up together at the Ryder Cup in Europe over the weekend.
On Wednesday, U.S. team captain Jim Furyk indicated the two American stars won’t be reunited at this year’s tournament for the first time since they played together at the tourney in 2004.
When the two were paired 14 years ago, Woods and Mickelson did not play well and helped contribute to an 18½-9½ defeat at Oakland Hills, the biggest home defeat for the U.S. in Ryder Cup history.
“I guess nothing’s out of the realm,” Furyk said. “They did play some golf yesterday. I think they both mentioned it would be a lot better pairing than it was in the past. I won’t ever say it wouldn’t happen. But it’s not too likely.”
On Wednesday, Woods was in a group with Justin Thomas, Patrick Reed, and Jordan Spieth. Since Reed and Spieth have teamed up and played decently at the past two Ryder Cups, that may indicate Woods will be pairing with Thomas.
Mickelson practiced with Bryson DeChambeau, Webb Simpson and Bubba Watson.
