It’s a bona fide trend in the culinary world:
More and more chefs around the globe are cooking, caveman-like, over open flames.
But this particular restaurant takes that idea to a whole new level. Literally. Altitudinously.
The place is called El Diablo, and it’s located on top of a volcano on an island off the coast of Morocco. And yes, they most definitely outfitted one of the volcano’s dormant openings to act as the house grill.
If you think building a restaurant over a massive heat source like a volcano is insane, it’s because it is. According to Atlas Obscura, nine layers of basalt rock had to be laid down just to protect the restaurant from the heat.
Not only that — it’s a freaking dormant volcano. Not active, sure, but also not extinct. Last eruption was in 1824. But who’s counting, right?
