USC’s Sam Darnold may have punted his chance to throw at the NFL Scouting Combine, but the rest of the top quarterback prospects in the upcoming draft didn’t pass up the opportunity. The big winner of Saturday’s on-field throwing session at Lucas Stadium, according to Sports Illustrated? That would be big-armed Wyoming QB Josh Allen, who showed just how big-armed he could be with a 66-yard bomb to Texas A&M receiver Christian Kirk. Almost as impressive was Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, “who threw the ball accurately and with zip.”
Evaluators watched less impressive turns from UCLA’s Josh Rosen — the supposed top pure-passer in the draft bounced an easy slant pass — and Louisville’s Lamar Jackson, who was trying to show scouts why they shouldn’t consider a switch to wide receiver. Jackson didn’t display consistent accuracy.
As SI writer Jenny Vrentas puts it: “This year’s quarterback class presents an interesting conundrum for teams that need one, because each of the top prospects has concerns that weren’t alleviated during their senior seasons: Rosen’s personality, Darnold’s long delivery, Mayfield’s antics, Allen’s accuracy.”
