The Baltimore Ravens took quarterback Lamar Jackson with the last pick of the first round in the 2018 NFL Draft, and they plan on using him.
But, according to reports from practice, Jackson’s usage won’t come at the expense of incumbent starting signal-caller Joe Flacco as the Ravens have been running plays where both players touch the ball.
During these plays, Flacco is taking the snap from under center while Jackson is lining up outside the pocket in a number of different spots depending on the specific play. It’s an approach Baltimore hopes will help jumpstart its stagnant offense and get the ball into the hands of playmakers more often.
Or, it’s just a ploy to make defenses prepare for these type of plays even though Baltimore actually has no intention of using them during an NFL game.
When asked about the tag-team approach, offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg played coy.
“We’ll see,” he said. “We’re at the start of training camp. We’re going to see what everybody’s strengths are. Look, we’ll try to use all of our players that are eligible; we’ll try to use the whole field, we’ll get it to our best players more.”
