Will the NBCA Coach of the Year Award Winner Be Fired by Toronto Raptors?
The award from the National Basketball Coaches Association might not save Dwane Casey.
Being recognized as the best coach in the league this season by his NBA peers might not be enough to stop Toronto Raptors head coach Dwane Casey from losing his job.
Casey, who saw his team get swept out of the playoffs in four games for the second straight season by the Cleveland Cavaliers, was announced as the 2018 recipient of the Michael H. Goldberg NBCA Coach of the Year Award by the National Basketball Coaches Association on Wednesday.
The day before, multiple outlets in Toronto reported the Raptors were “strongly leaning towards” firing Casey.
“With his team fresh off another disappointing postseason exit, Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri has some hard decisions to make over the coming months,” according to Josh Lewenberg of TSN. “Head coach Dwane Casey is expected to be the first domino to fall. The evaluation period is ongoing but, according to sources, the Raptors are strongly leaning towards making a coaching change.”
Whether he is still employed or not, Casey will receive his NBCA award in September.
In June, the NBA will announce the winner of its Red Auerbach Trophy for Coach of the Year.
