In a move that raised some industry eyebrows, ESPN filled out its Monday Night Football coverage roster with a surprise addition: Booger McFarland.

McFarland will join Jason Witten, Joe Tessitore and Lisa Salters on MNF. Witten and Tessitore will be in the booth, Salters will fill her traditional sideline role and McFarland will be an on-field analyst.

While not all broadcasts utilize an on-field analyst, Tony Siragusa filled the role quite well while serving in that capacity alongside Kenny Albert and Daryl Johnston in the booth for Fox Sports.

However, this is the first time ESPN has used an on-field analyst for MNF so it will be interesting to see how McFarland – who has been with the company since 2014 and is more known for covering college football – does in the new position.

ESPN used Louis Riddick as an on-field analyst during the Pro Bowl and apparently liked what the position – which merges sideline reporting with traditional analysis – brought to the broadcast.

This season is the first in recent memory for MNF without Sean McDonough and Jon Gruden in the booth.
