Actor Ed Skrein is stepping down from a major role in the upcoming ‘Hellboy’ reboot due to a controversy over his casting, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Skrein, who is best known for playing the villain in ‘Deadpool,’ said in a statement posted to social media on Monday that he decided to step away from the role of Major Ben Daimio, who is Asian in the comics, due to backlash from fans.

“It is clear that representing this character in a culturally accurate way holds significance for people, and that to neglect this responsibility would continue a worrying tendency to obscure ethnic minority stories and voice in the Arts. I feel it is important to honour and respect that. There I have decided to step down so the role can be cast appropriately,” the actor wrote in a statement. See his full remarks below.
