Each week, our inbox runneth over with news of gear, apparel and tech releases from around the world. In this feature, we’ll parse through the best of them. Today: A Big Bang in millennial pink, new Everlane face masks and a device to keep you cool on the go.
The ReNew Sport Short
Everlane just dropped the ReNew Sport Short — a casual all-day short that will handle pretty much anything you throw at it. Made with 100 percent recycled polyester, the shorts feature active two-way stretch, a supportive mesh liner and water-repellent properties to ensure all-day comfort while you hike, bike, swim and lounge around this summer. The shorts are available in navy, dark forest and dark royal, and priced at $50 — not too shabby for a good-looking set that does everything.
The Roger Sneaker
In addition to being one of the best, if not the best, tennis players, Roger Federer is also somewhat of a style icon. So it’s only natural that he would partner with Swiss footwear brand On for a collaborative sneaker. The appropriately named ‘The Roger’ gleans inspiration from classic ’70s tennis sneakers. Besides being attractive, what with its sleek white design and gold accents, it also happens to be highly functional and comfortable, meaning you can actually play tennis in it and not worry about rolling your ankle. While the sneaker has unsurprisingly already sold out, you can go ahead and sign up for the next drop.
Saturdays x Mr Porter Gone Surfin
Channel your inner surfer dude this summer with a capsule collection from Saturdays NYC x Mr Porter. The collaboration is just one part of Mr Porter’s larger “Gone Surfin’” collection, which features 17 brands that all took inspiration from sunsets, seashores, waves and all things beachy. Saturdays’ collection with the retailer includes board shorts and button-downs with wavy, psychedelic designs as well as soft tees and hoodies featuring a reinterpreted yin and yang symbol.
Sony Reon Pocket
Your portable air conditioner is here. And it’s in your shirt. Just launched in Japan, the smartphone-controlled Reon vents warm air away from your back (or brings in warmer air during the colder months) for about two to four hours per charge. You’ll need a special shirt with a pocket in the middle of your back — yes, Sony makes one — to get this, uh, cool device.
Noah x Birdwell Collection
For its latest collab, Noah partnered with Birdwell Beach Britches, the surf-minded swim-trunks expert that’s stuck to its guns since it started in the ‘60s. Do we wish we already had the neon long-sleeve and paisley trunks in our possession since we’re already well into July? Obviously. But we’ll squeeze every last drop of summer out of this gear if it’s the last thing we do. (Pro tip: If the piece you want is sold out at Noah, check Birdwell’s site.)
Bodega x New Balance X-Racer “All-Terrain”
Boston-based streetwear brand Bodega is bringing some of their signature artistry to New Balance’s X-racer silhouette, pairing darker hues with vibrant pops of color, and exchanging the original featherweight mesh overlay construction with a more outdoorsy look. Drops on July 13.
Aether x Veldt Artist-Designed Helmets
If you took our advice and bought a Honda Monkey Bike, or are simply looking to upgrade from your current motorcycle helmet situation, you can’t do better than these one-of-a-kind brain buckets from Aether. The outdoor brand teamed up with helmet purveyor Veldt and commissioned 13 artists to dream up custom designs that range from graphic collages to head-in-the-clouds abstraction. But that’s not the best part; all proceeds will go to Riders for Health, a nonprofit that helps deliver healthcare to hard-to-reach places in Africa via, you guessed it, motorcycle.
Ten Thousand Set Short
Ten Thousand holds a place both in our pantheon of 15 new activewear brands you should know and the list of our staff’s favorite gym shorts. But the new Set Short isn’t just for working out — it’s for swimming, too. As the brand’s first pair of swim trunks, the Set Short was heavily tested by everyone from former Navy SEALs to Ironman triathletes (no kidding), so even though these are only available for preorder (shipping on the 25th), you can trust they’ll be worth the wait.
Uniqlo x Theory
Since its founding in the late nineties, Theory has been one of the premier places for those seeking refined, tailored menswear and womenswear. Their new collaboration with Uniqlo, set to be released July 16, is simple yet effective, featuring no more than polos, shorts and pants. Everything is available in neutral tones, with the occasional light blue or green, with subtle details such as contrasting collars and zippers at the neck rather than buttons. In other words, it’s a minimalist’s dream.
Rumpl X NASA NanoLoft Puffy Blanket & Stuff Sack
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission, sustainable blanket brand Rumpl released a limited-edition capsule of vintage meets modern meets space-age designs. Included in the capsule is Rumpl’s best-selling water-resistant Puffy Blanket that features a shell made of 100 percent post-consumer recycled polyester, NanoLoft insulation, a space suit-inspired colorway, as well as NASA’s worm logo and flag patches.
Outerknown x Bruce Brown Films
Outerknown is extending its Bruce Brown collection with Mr Porter as part of the “Gone Surfin’” collection. The collection features tees, sweatshirts and even jackets printed with nods to Browns most iconic films (and important facets of surfing culture as a whole) from The Endless Summer to Surfing Hollow Days. It’s a proper homage to the filmmaker responsible for bringing surfing to the mainstream. Even if you’ve never caught a wave, you can at the very least indulge your inner surfer by outfitting yourself with the collection’s laidback wares, all while honoring one of the greats.
The 100% Human Face Mask 5-Pack
Everlane just added five brightly-colored, tie-dye face masks to its 100% Human Collection, and we’ve already added them to our cart. We don’t need to tell you why you should wear a face mask, but with coronavirus cases rising across the nation, many more states, thankfully, are making it a mandatory practice when you leave your house. So you might as well cop a stylish, reusable mask that’ll bring you a small glimmer of joy when you venture out to get groceries.
Dr. Martens x Jean-Michel Basquiat
Available in a boot or shoe, this collaboration features “skull imagery, cryptic symbols and enigmatic epigrams” via the estate of late artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Classic Doc Martens silhouettes and one of the most instantly recognizable artists of our time — what’s not to love?
Bivrost Niflheim Single Malt Whisky
Dubbed the “world’s most northernmost whisky” and named after one of the nine worlds of Norse mythology, this ode to masculinity single malt is distilled at a very north, very nice 69 °N. It’s made from from nordic barley, fermented with glacial meltwater from the Lyngen Alps and stored in ex-sherry, virgin and ex-bourbon casks … which are all matured in underground storage vaults that were previously part of a network of tunnels in a Cold War NATO base.
Hublot Big Bang in Millennial Pink
The Hublot Big Bang is a lot of watch, and it’s certainly not for everyone (although Beyonce gifted Jay-Z a diamond-encrusted model for his 43rd birthday, and if it’s good enough for them …). But a Big Bang in, uh, millennial pink? On paper, that sounds like something spit out of a buzzword generator. In practice, the watch somehow miraculously works, though you’d have a much easier time pulling it off if you were Jay-Z.
Vuori Banks Short
It’s nice to find an athletic-style short without a liner; loose, breathable and with a solid amount of stretch, these’ll work for all day wear and can easily do double duty if you want to get out and move around. Hell, they can even double as a pair of board shorts if you’re of the surfing persuasion, with the added bonus that every pair is made from four to five recycled plastic bottles, thus helping to keep our oceans clean. The scalloped hem and contrast piping are nice throwback touches, and the small zippered front pocket is great for stashing keys and other small stuff.
Tombolo “Poseidon’s Wandering Eye” Hawaiian Shirt
We’ve been huge fans of Tombolo’s eye-catching “escape wear” since they burst onto the scene last year, and yet they continue to surprise (in a good way) with every drop. Our favorite of their latest is a collab with Dutch graphic designer Nick Liefhebber that plays like a psychedelic tribute to the mythical Greek sea lord and his aquatic denizens. The 100 percent tencel construction gives the shirt a pleasantly silky hand, and the considered details (white piping along the seams and pocket, Agoya shell buttons) really make it sing. Plus it comes with a free matching mask, which has got to be just about the swaggiest pandemic move going right now.
