Instagram has the profound ability to dilute an otherwise memorable moment.

Source: every concert I’ve been to in the last half decade, and the inexorable image of a thousand teenagers hoisting their phones aloft to #captureit.

Polaroid, while still instant, was different. It always felt like it enhanced them. A Polaroid snap felt authentic. And the iPhone will never be able to beat that.

Luckily — hands up in jubilation — the Polaroid lives again.

In commemoration of the company’s 80th anniversary, they have launched a new iteration called Polaroid Originals, the first release of which is an updated throwback to the 1977 original OpenStep. Appropriately coined the OpenStep2, the new shooter will feature a built-in flash, extended battery life, self-timer and USB charging.

At their launch party this week, renowned photographer Ryan McGinley, longtime Polaroid enthusiast, also announced a collaboration with Polaroid Originals. Stay tuned for more on that.

In the meantime, the new OneStep2 can be preordered on Polaroid Originals’ site for an approximate mid-October delivery for just $100.
