A couple months ago, we tested seven different bath towels that weren’t made from terrycloth. Terrycloth fabric has been in production since the mid-1800s, and its long loops allow it to take on lots of water, which is why it’s commonly used for towels, bath robes, headbands and diapers. But it’s gone the way of the dinos lately; when compared to newer tech in the towel space, it’s got the backbone of a napkin.
Onsen, which won our towel test, employs a honeycomb waffle weave constructed from long-staple cotton. It filters air, it doesn’t leave specks on your fingers, and it stretches well past the knees, even for folks standing above six feet. The only detriment to an Onsen towel is that the two-pack bundle is sort of pricey, at $100.
