President Trump prioritized the coal industry during his 2016 campaign, when he promised communities who rely on mining that he would reinvigorate the industry with new jobs and fewer climate regulations.
In the latest episode of “Last Week Tonight,” host John Oliver plucked at numbers released by members of the Trump administration, noting that experts and coal mining CEOS, including outspoken Trump supporter Bob Murray of Murray Energy Corporation, acknowledge that the reasons for the decline of the coal mining industry are multi-faceted—and the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that there have been less than 2,000 jobs directly added to the coal industry since the end of the last quarter, not 50,000 as Trump claims.
