Where do you go after you’ve helped launch a website where people can discuss almost anything — a platform nearly as vast as the entirety of the internet itself? For Alexis Ohanian, a co-founder of Reddit, the answer might come via the beautiful game.
Bloomberg reports that Initialized Capital, the venture capital fund Ohanian co-founded, has invested heavily in Gloria. Gloria is a new app created by two Argentines; at Bloomberg, writer Carolina Millan describes it as “an app that looks to ease soccer scouting by providing a platform where players in remote areas can submit standardized material and get noticed in the industry.”
TechCrunch also reports that, in addition to the investment, Ohanian will be joining Gloria’s board of directors.
Gloria’s founders, Matias Castello and Victoire Cogevina, both have ties to the world of sports. Cogevina is a former agent, while Castello is the son of a former player for Argentine powerhouse Racing Club de Avellaneda.
The duo’s goal with Gloria is to allow players who might not have the infrastructure in place to be able to be scouted by bigger clubs. Questions of income inequality and player resources come up frequently when discussing soccer — particularly in the United States.
But even the most well-designed app can’t function if no one is paying attention to the data it’s providing. Thankfully, Gloria has already lined up a partnership with Argentina’s SuperLiga, Bloomberg reports, with German and Spain the next areas targeted for expansion.
Will this app help discover the superstars of tomorrow? We’ll know soon: Gloria is set to launch in beta today.
