For the first time in over a year — and for the first time this season — Liverpool reached the end of a Premier League game on the losing side. On the road against Watford, a team on the verge of relegation, Liverpool had plenty of reasons to be confident of a win.
They didn’t get it. Instead, Watford emerged victorious on the day with a commanding 3-0 win at Vicarage Road. Neither team scored in the first half. Not longer after the second half began, though, Watford established their lead and kept Liverpool at bay.
Ismaïla Sarr accounted for two of the goals, in the 54th and 60th minutes, while Troy Deeney further increased Watford’s lead in the 72nd minute.

This was Liverpool’s first loss in a Premier League game since January 3, 2019. And while it’s unlikely to affect the odds that they’ll win the league by much — they’re still over 20 points above Manchester City, after all — it is an end to their hopes that they’d finish the season entirely unbeaten.
This feat has been accomplished in the Premier League era: Arsenal’s 2003-04 team, dubbed “The Invincibles,” went an entire season without a loss.
Still, Liverpool remain on a path to win the Premier League, possibly setting a record for points along the way. And they also the defending UEFA Champions League winners — so they have a few things they can still take comfort in.
