In 23 regular-season and postseason games as the quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes had never been held under 26 points.

Playing at home on Sunday night against the Colts (3-2), Mahomes and the previously undefeated Chiefs were held to half that number and fell 19-13 in an upset loss to Indianapolis.

Even worse, the reigning MVP aggravated an ankle injury during the Sunday Night Football that could linger throughout the season.

Mahomees, who had 321 passing yards in Sunday night’s defeat, took a season-high four sacks in the loss to Indy and had a pronounced limp at one point.

“It’s going to be a little sore tomorrow,” Mahomes said of his ankle, according to The Athletic. “I was going to battle through it. We were in a hard-fought game. I felt like we still had a chance, so I was going to find a way to get through the rest of the game. Obviously, we need to get healthier. This loss hurts a lot.”

In addition to Mahomes, Kansas City also lost receiver Sammy Watkins (hamstring), linebacker Anthony Hitchens (groin), offensive lineman Andrew Wylie (ankle) and defensive lineman Chris Jones (groin) to injury during the loss.

For the Colts, running back Marlon Mack and the Indianapolis offensive line dominated the Chiefs from start to finish, racking up 180 yards on the ground and also clearing the way for quarterback Jacoby Brissett’s rushing touchdown in the first quarter.

Kicker Adam Vinatieri, who had contemplated retiring after missing kick after kick during a season-opening loss, drilled 4-of-4 on field goals and also nailed his lone extra point.
