After a 2018 series by The Boston Globe‘s Spotlight team revealed tight end Aaron Hernandez had a sexual relationship with his high school quarterback while they were both playing football, a Netflix documentary series which hit the streaming service this month doubled down on that assertion.
For the first time, Hernandez’s former fiancee Shayanna Jenkins spoke out about the ex-New England Patriots player allegedly being bisexual.
Speaking to Good Morning America on Wednesday about the revelations in Netflix’s Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez, Jenkins said the deceased NFL star never gave her any indication that he might have been gay or bisexual.
If he did feel that way, or if he felt the urge, I wish that I was told,” Jenkins said. “And I wish that he would’ve told me ’cause I would not have loved him any differently. I would have understood. It’s not shameful and I don’t think anybody should be shameful of who they are inside, regardless of who they love. I think it’s a beautiful thing. I just wish I was able to tell him that.”
Jenkins, who was offered compensation to be interviewed for the series but declined, also took exception with Killer Inside probing Hernandez’s sexuality after his death.
“You can’t describe someone’s sexuality without them being here,” she said. “Although I’ve had a child with Aaron, I still can’t tell you what he was feeling inside.”
Hernandez committed suicide in his jail cell in 2017 after having been convicted of one murder but acquitted of two others.
