Few people take pride in what they look like at the aiport anymore.
But if you’re single, it might be time to start looking your best on departure days, because a travel app called App in the Air recently added a feature that allows passengers on the same flight to message each other, affording them an opportunity to grab a coffee or drink before take-off.
App in the Air has been around since 2012 as a “personal flying assistant”; it allows you to check on your flight status, provides airport maps and logs all your miles. The messaging feature is a new addition, though. It makes your profile and information publicly available — name, home country, hours spent in the air that year — to others on your flight for that day, and allows users to reach out to one another directly in app.
We like it — airports are almost universally fun more with company; sharing a couple overpriced Heinkens with a new potential flame beats trying to remember your Netflix password while splayed out at the gate.
Still, it does raise some questions. Won’t the “pool” of persons, if you will, be a bit light on most flights? You need someone who has this app, is actively using it, single and wants to meet you. That’s the other thing: your message can sit there for hours … and then you might sit on the flight for hours next to the person you unsuccessfuly propositioned.
Who knows, though? There is definitely a global community of frequent travelers, and many in need of romantic company due to their uniquely challenging lifestyle. We’ll hold out hope that somewhere, sometime soon, a couple glasses will clink thanks to App in the Air. Safe travels, all.
