Remember the chaos when the Galaxy Note 7 phones seemingly had exploding batteries?
It’s gonna be worse now that it’s Apple’s turn.
After Apple recently announced a recall of the 15-inch MacBook Pro laptop due to a battery issue, the FAA banned them from flights. And that’s a total ban for both cargo or as a carry-on.
As Forbes notes, this is actually a continuation of the FAA ban on airlines carrying any lithium-ion battery that has been recalled, no matter what the device. Since the airports aren’t going to know if you have a replacement battery, you may want to bring paperwork to prove you’ve had it replaced… and then hope for the best.
The 15-inch MacBook Pros in question (which Forbes estimates at 480,000) were sold primarily between September of 2015 and February 2017. According to Apple, “product eligibility is determined by product serial number” (you can test that here). The company will replace the batteries free of charge, though that will take 2-3 weeks.
In the meantime? Fly with a back-up laptop or tablet if you can.
