Jury of One’s Beers

“Do-it-yourself” works best when yourself knows what he’s doing.

For yourselves who absolutely do, check out Brooklyn Wort: a beer-making battle royale between the borough’s most talented homebrewers, running this Saturday.

Named for the sugary liquid that ferments into alcohol, Brooklyn Wort is a beer-off between 25 everyday malticians, ranging from a punny Random House publisher (Simon “Malt Whitman” Tepas, serving Broken Arrow India Pale Ale), to an investigative reporter from CBS’ “Inside Edition”, who’s pouring a German ale he calls “Munich Monster Mash”.

The Wort’s hosting two tastings at 2pm and 4pm. Advance tickets are sold out, but there are tickets available at the door (just make sure to get there early). A ticket gets you a tasting of all 25 beers, plus stout-braised brisket and pulled pork from the North Carolina BBQ mavens at Fat Beagle.

While you drink/eat, the homebrewers will be judged by NY beer experts (Sixpoint Brewery, Brooklyn Brewery, more), who’ll award the best homebrewer an $800 prize.

Another $200 goes to the “People’s Choice”, who is voted on by the attendees — that means you, after you eagerly embrace the true meaning of DIY, i.e., drink it yourself.
