This Agent Could Make Kirk Cousins the Highest-Paid NFL Quarterback

Mike McCartney is an NFL agent who spends much of his year on the road. He started his journey nearly 30 years ago, when he went from football sidelines to a front office job with the Philadelphia Eagles, to the living rooms of college players who had dreams of joining the National Football League. Now, McCartney, 53, finds himself in the middle of the most-talked-about quarterback situation of the 2018 season. The Washington Post writes that should the Washington Redskins let him hit free agency, Kirk Cousins could soon become the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. But no one has heard of McCartney. As an earnest, devout Christian who quotes Bible verses with the same ease and excitement he uses to talk about film or prepare his clients for the draft, McCartney has no use for the spotlight. He is a rare find, The Post writes, because as the son of a college coach, this NAIA quarterback-turned-talent evaluator insists he isn’t motivated by the thrill of the chase. He doesn’t always vie for the top prospects, but instead is looking for players who embody his belief in family and faith. He represents 28 players on active rosters and a handful of out-of-work free agents. Cousins is one of them. It is all but assumed Cousin’s next deal would surpass the record-breaking five-year, $137.5 million contract given to San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo earlier this month. “Nothing has ever been handed to Kirk Cousins,” McCartney said to The Post. “It’s who he’s become. It’s part of his story now.”
