The Winner of the Odell Beckham Sweepstakes Will Be … the New York Giants
Odds are the G-Men will make Beckham the league’s richest wide receiver.
After having already been linked to the Rams, 49ers and even the Patriots this offseason, another team has emerged as the front-runner for Odell Beckham’s services: the Giants.
Scheduled to make $8.459 million in the final year of his rookie deal, New York’s embattled wide receiver reported for the start of the Giants’ offseason program this week, a gesture of good faith that could pave the way for the team giving in and inking him to a lucrative long-term deal.
Coming off an ankle injury, the 25-year-old wideout is still probably the most valuable player on the Giants roster and his help is needed if New York wants to improve upon its 3-13 record.
Coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Dave Gettleman realize this and, while they likely won’t make him the NFL’s highest player, odds are they will make Beckham the league’s richest wide receiver by guaranteeing him $60 million or more.
Whatever they decide to do, the Giants have to do it by the start of the draft on April 26.
“The Giants have had enough trouble drafting difference-making players,” writes ESPN’s Jordan Raanan. “It would take an extraordinary circumstance for Beckham not to eventually get a second contract with the team that selected him in the first round (12th overall) of the 2014 NFL draft. He’s their best player.”
