Michigan State to Pay Out $500 Million in Settlements to Larry Nassar Victims
The university has settled hundreds of suits seeking damages for Nassar’s predatory behavior.
The continuous predatory behavior of disgraced school doctor Larry Nassar will cost Michigan State University at least $500 million.
Under the terms of a settlement that was reached this week, MSU will settle the hundreds of lawsuits filed against the school by Nassar’s sexual assault victims by paying out $425 million now and putting aside $75 million for a trust fund to pay for future claims against Nassar.
The agreement between the school and the victims was reached following two days of closed-door mediation sessions between lawyers for both parties.
“This historic settlement came about through the bravery of more than 300 women and girls who had the courage to stand up and refuse to be silenced,” said Survivor’s attorney John Manly. “We appreciate the diligent efforts of Mick Grewal and the survivors’ attorneys across the nation who worked to obtain this measure of justice and healing. It is the sincere hope of all of the survivors that the legacy of this settlement will be far reaching institutional reform that will end the threat of sexual assault in sports, schools and throughout our society.”
Nassar is serving a life sentence for crimes including sexual assault and possession of child pornography.
