With the show’s ratings continuing to struggle, ESPN will turn to former MLB player Alex Rodriguez as a pinch broadcaster on Friday’s edition of Get Up.
The morning show, whose ratings issues are well-documented, will have A-Rod join regular show hosts Mike Greenberg and Michelle Beadle for two hours in the studio. Jalen Rose, the program’s third regular host, will be doing the show remotely.
In addition to shaking things up on Get Up, the move will also be a cross-promotion for Rodriguez being in the booth for the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox playing for the first time on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball.
According to the New York Post, temporarily adding Rodriguez into the mix on the show serves a third purpose – it brings him one step closer to being the next Michael Strahan.
By hosting the show, Rodriguez gets a chance to show what he could do if he had a regular spot hosting a daily show on ESPN or another network.
“Rodriguez hosting Get Up is something to watch on Friday. ESPN thinks A-Rod has star power, even as the SNB ratings have so far belied that view,” The Post writes. “Get Up may not be A-Rod’s final destination, but his desire for more on TV is far from done.”
