A new article in USA TODAY looks beyond tonight’s championship game between Alabama and Georgia and toward the stew of trouble facing college football. First, there are the increasingly exorbitant salaries of coaches, as top coordinators are suddenly bringing in a staggering $2 million annually. Those contracts coupled with growing public unease about the lack of compensation for the athletes themselves promise a coming PR nightmare for the NCAA. And Arizona’s recent firing of Rich Rodriguez amidst sexual harassment allegations could incite a wave of such revelations in the NCAA. The coming offseason promises to focus more on the many forms of inequality present in the NCAA than on football.
