During his radio program on Monday, conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh told his audience that he’s been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer and will need to take some time off for testing that will help determine his treatment.
Limbaugh, a Republican kingmaker, said he didn’t want to discuss personal matters but also realized it wouldn’t be wise for him to cover up his illness and potentially cause speculation about his health.
“I have to tell you something today that I wish I didn’t have to tell you,” announced Limbaugh. “It is what it is. And you know me, I’m the mayor of Realville. My intention is to come here every day I can. And to do this program as normally and competently as usual.”
Confirmed by two medical institutions in late January, Limbaugh’s cancer has only caused him to experience shortness of breath thus far.
Limbaugh, 69, started his first national radio show in 1988 from New York and has paved the way for similar right-wing talking heads such as Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck and Bill O’Reilly.

“It’s shocking to the industry, and it should be shocking to the political establishment,” Michael Harrison, publisher of radio trade industry publication Talkers, told The AP.
