Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos was quietly leading the most dominant company in the U.S. economy, had just launched an ambitious space exploration project, and had recently rescued an iconic newspaper by buying the Washington Post. The richest man in the world had the world by the tail—and then he went to Hollywood.

New York Times profile examines Jeff Bezos’ entrée into the L.A. scene, and traces many of his recent troubles and public embarrassments back to his fateful decision to plant a flag there.

After all, L.A. is where he met his paramour, Lauren Sanchez, whom Bezos has left his wife for. It’s where the billionaire’s famous, Oprah-Book-Club-author and security consultant, Gavin de Becker, hails from, someone who seems to be operating on his own agenda at times. And it might have been the originating source, thanks to Sanchez family drama and Beverly Hills mom rumors, of the National Enquirer‘s bombshell story revealing Bezos’ intimate sexts to Sanchez.

While Amazon the company’s share price has remained unscathed, and Amazon Studio’s foray into movies and TV has seen unqualified successes like Manchester by the Sea and The Big Sick, as well as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Transparent, respectively, the Times poses some hard questions about the personal toll of going Hollywood for the world’s richest man.
