Arnold Schwarzenegger has been working out for five decades, so you might want to listen when the movie star-turned politico has something to say about health and fitness. “A healthier, fitter America starts with you,” is how he sees it.

More than 60 million Americans pay for a gym membership every year, but only 33% actually use it. According to foodindustry.com, in the US, there are as many gyms as there are supermarkets. So why aren’t we more fit?

In a recent op-ed for CNN, Schwarzenegger says there’s no quick fix, fad diet or exercise that is going to make your fitness journey any easier “It’s time for the fitness industry to be honest with people… There is no gimmick. There is no shortcut. There is no magic pill. Everyone’s fitness journey will be unique, but a healthy lifestyle takes commitment, patience and motivation.” Schwarzenegger explained.

The Terminator star, who in the recent past underwent open heart surgery, has had struggles with fitness. After surgery, the action star couldn’t lift weights, run or even breathe easily.

The day-to-day struggle led Schwarzenegger to a realization. “People put too much faith in big moments, believing they’ll suddenly flip a switch and be healthier,” he observes. “There’s no such thing. A healthier future is every tiny step we take, or every little rep, that ultimately leads us to our goal. We all think we can do it alone, but no one does anything alone. As I always say, no one is self-made. We all need support — even Terminators.”

The former Governator offers one last piece of advice: Be better together, today.
