As we’ve discussed, boozy ice cream is having a moment these days, and apparently, New York governor Andrew Cuomo is done trying to stand in the way. On Monday, the governor signed legislation making it legal to manufacture and sell liquor-infused ice cream and other frozen desserts in the state.

The move hopes to take advantage of the “increasing consumer demand” for boozy ice cream to help dairy workers, liquor producers, restaurants and retailers in the state, according to a news release from the governor’s office.

“The craft beverage industry has experienced explosive growth in New York and with that comes a responsibility to advance regulations that help ensure long-term viability, protect consumers and provide farmers with opportunities to increase their business,” Cuomo said in a statement. “This legislation will further grow a burgeoning industry and boost small businesses while helping to put them on a path of sustained growth that empowers both producers and consumers.”

The new law will require liquor-infused ice cream to contain a maximum of 5 percent alcohol by volume. The law will require the same labeling and warnings as ice cream products made with wine, beer and cider, which were already legal in the state.

“New Yorkers are already able to responsibly enjoy beer, wine, and cider infused ice creams. Thanks to this bill, vendors will now be able to offer their customers another delicious treat,” said state senator Rachel May. “This legislation will help New York’s dairy industry and our liquor and craft beverage industries at the same time. I am very grateful to the Governor for signing this into law, and I look forward to sharing some maple bourbon ice cream with him at next year’s State Fair!”

Are there more dire things going on the world right now? Sure. Will there actually even be a State Fair next year? Honestly, who knows. But at least we can get drunk on ice cream while waiting out the end times.
