Field of Light in Uluru by Bruce Munro

When British Artist Bruce Munro visited Uluru (né Ayers Rock), a lightbulb went on.

Actually, 50,000 lightbulbs.

After conceiving of the project during a visit in 1992, Munro returned to the red sands of Uluru to install Field of Light, a solar-powered installation of 50,000 frosted-glass bulbs spread over approximately 160,000 square feet. The colors change and illuminate the desert while visitors walk along criss-crossing pathways.

The exhibition — which opened this month and will be on view for a full year — has been nicknamed Tili Wiru Tjuta Nyakutjaku (“looking at lots of beautiful lights”) by the local indigenous Anangu people.

It’s pretty easy to see why.
