A little of a lot has happened to the Red Hot Chili Peppers over its long, successful career. That’s because if you look at the face of the band—vocalist Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea—it’s business as usual.

But the minor tweaks, specifically to the band’s guitarist, have shaken it to its core: the death of original guitarist Hillel Slovak; the chemistry-lacking tenure of Dave Navarro in the ’90s; the untimely departure of John Frusciante (the band’s strongest axeman); and the current lead, Josh Klinghoffer, who was previously a touring sideman for the band.

While most diehard fans still yearn for the days of Frusciante, the latest single, “Goodbye Angles,” from 2016’s The Getaway, is some of Klinghoffer’s best work. In fact, that lead riff makes us forget for a second that Frusciante even left the band.
