Late last week, concern arose among Atlanta Falcons fans (and anyone whose fantasy team included him) that wide receiver Julio Jones might sit out the season if he didn’t get a new contract. Fans and fantasy managers alike can breathe a little more easily now: reports out of Atlanta indicate that Jones has signed a sizable new contract with his team. NFL.com has the details:
On Saturday, Jones’ shiny new deal is coming to fruition the wide receiver and Falcons are finalizing an extension that is expected to be a three-year, $66 million deal, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport are reporting, per league sources. Rapoport adds there are a “few big conversations left to finalize.”
With this new deal, Jones would become the highest-paid player at his position in the NFL. Even better? $64 million of the total $66 million is guaranteed.
This offseason has involved more than a few high-profile moves and contract extensions. Michael Thomas’s new deal with the New Orleans Saints offers a guaranteed $61 million over 5 years, and averages out to $100 million over the course of the contract. The Kansas City Chiefs also signed Tyreek Hill to a 3-year deal valued at $54 million — though that was not without some controversy, given the accusations of abuse against Hill.
