On the spectrum of timepiece preferences, there are the Apple Watch devotees on one end and, on the other, people like Omega President and CEO Raynald Aeschlimann who believes smartwatches are “not to be considered as a watch.”
But if you kept going down the line to watch purism, you’d end up with something like the Glass Watch.
The 16th timepiece in Issey Miyake’s Watch Project, it features a 39mm case with a solid glass top and stainless steel base. But because the movement is encased in the metal, the glass adds additional bulk to the watch, making it protrude from the wrist much more than your standard ticker.
That said, the light-reflecting design from Tokujin Yoshioka, who has collaborated with the Japanese brand for over 20 years, is unique in a market saturated with minimalist watch faces. This variety isn’t created to offer up a quick and easy way to read the time, so it better be an eye catcher when it pops out of your jacket sleeve — which this certainly is.
The Glass Watch — which comes with a silver or black dial, and a black or brown leather band — will be available starting November 10th at Issey Miyake stores and online.
