Given time, the fashion iconography of one decade can easily become art for a future generation. If you’ve ever been taken with the idea of immersing yourself in the world of high fashion from the 1980s and 1990s, the 2020s is the perfect time to do so. The last few years have seen a number of works that delve back into this history, with longtime Vogue editor André Leon Talley’s memoir being one of the highest-profile examples.

Now, another iconic figure from that world has taken to a different medium for a retrospective of their own. This month, the Kunstpalast museum in Düsseldorf, Germany, opened the new exhibition Captivate! Fashion Photography from the 1990s; what’s especially notable about the show is its curator: Claudia Schiffer, who spent the decade in question as one of the world’s highest-profile supermodels.

That makes Captivate! something of an insider’s look at the world of fashion in the 1990s. The museum’s description of the exhibit notes that it will feature work by Richard Avedon, Corinne Day, Karl Lagerfeld, Juergen Teller and Herb Ritts, among others. Schiffer’s curatorial work also extends to the presence of items from her own collection in the show, making for an especially personal take on a specific time, place and scene.

Can’t make it to Germany? The Captivate! exhibition also has an accompanying coffee table book from Prestel set for release in the U.S. in November.

The show encompasses 150 distinct works, and is set to run through January 9, 2022. If you want to read more about the exhibit from Schiffer herself, Vogue has an enlightening interview with her.
