The Cardinals defensive back who has been suspended through the 2020 season by the NFL after getting caught betting on football in Las Vegas placed a wager on his team to lose, according to ESPN.
Hurt during training camp and ineligible to play this season after being placed on injured reserve, Josh Shaw placed a parlay bet on November 10 at a Caesars sportsbook in Las Vegas. The bet was on second halves of three games, one of which was the Buccaneers against the Cardinals.
Shaw, who identified himself as a “professional football player” on his application for a betting account (which is how he got caught), bet the Bucs minus one point against the Cardinals and they ended up winning, and covering, 30-27.
After Caesars notified the Nevada Gaming Control Board and the NFL, an investigation revealed there was no evidence any inside information was used or that the game was compromised in any way.
Regardless, the NFL suspended Shaw for next season. “If you work in the NFL in any capacity, you may not bet on NFL football,” commissioner Roger Goodell said in the release announcing the suspension.
A special teams-gunner with the Chiefs and Buccaneers in 2018 who made 12 tackles, Shaw signed a one-year contract with the Cardinals prior to last season.
Though it’s unlikely the team will want to bring him back after this fiasco, Shaw can petition the NFL for reinstatement on or after February 15, 2021.
