Since 1950, the Senior Bowl has showcased some of college football’s best players who are soon to graduate. Emphasis on “showcased” — the event is designed to give NFL teams an idea of who they might want to draft for the following season. Sometimes the Senior Bowl makes the news for the players who aren’t appearing in it — but notable alumni of the game include the likes of DeMarcus Ware, Terrell Owens, Jim McMahon and Brett Favre.
For this year’s Senior Bowl — formally speaking, the Reese’s Senior Bowl — the North team defeated the South team by a score of 34-17. The Detroit Lions’ coaching staff took charge of the North, while their counterparts for the Cincinnati Bengals coached the South.
In a game like this, individual performances can also carry a lot of weight, win or lose. Leading that list? Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert, who drew plenty of accolades and was named the game’s MVP. Herbert played in the game’s first quarter, where he went 9 for 13, passing for a touchdown.

Also impressing many? Syracuse’s Alton Robinson, who managed two sacks over the course of the game.

Football fans waiting to see how performances in today’s game translate into draft selection will need to wait a little longer: this year’s NFL Draft won’t begin until April 23.
