After luring Jon Gruden from the Monday Night Football booth to the sidelines before the season, the Oakland Raiders are dipping back into the TV world to fill another hole in their front office.
According to reports, NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock will join Gruden in Oakland as the new general manager for the Raiders.
A draft analyst who has called pro games for the NFL Network and Notre Dame games for NBC, Mayock has zero front-office experience.
Mayock, 60, played college football at Boston College and had a brief NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants.
Despite his lofty title, Mayock will likely have to run any and all of his decisions by Gruden, who has a 10-year contract with the Raiders and is clearly calling the shots in Oakland, for better or worse.
“He loves it,” Gruden said. “He has done it for a long time. I know he has had opportunities to get back into the NFL as a general manager. We will see what happens. We will see how the dust settles.”
He also called Mayock a “passionate personnel man.”
The Raiders have the No. 4 overall pick in the draft, as well as the first-round picks of the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears.
Mayock will replace Reggie McKenzie, whom the Raiders fired earlier this month.
