As the coronavirus continues to spread around the world, it was only a matter of time before more high-profile athletes tested positive for the virus, and now we have a third case in the NBA. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Detroit Pistons forward Christian Wood has tested positive for COVID-19, making him the third basketball player, after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert and his teammate Donovan Mitchell.
According to CBS Sports, Wood is said to not be exhibiting any symptoms of the disease, a common occurrence that nonetheless still makes him a risk for spreading it to those he comes into contact with. The Pistons played against Utah on March 7, and Wood was matched up for the majority of the game against Gobert; he finished with 30 points and 11 rebounds, though the Jazz won the game 111-105.
Since Gobert’s controversial positive test — he had jokingly touched all the mics in a post-game press conference prior to his diagnosis — a handful of teams that played against the Jazz recently have undergone self-quarantines and testing. So far, only the Toronto Raptors have publicly said that their tests all came back negative. A child in Rhode Island also tested positive recently, with the link being an autograph session with Gobert when the Jazz played the Celtics last week.
Wood had been in the middle of a surge before the NBA postponed its season, his fifth in the league; since Detroit traded away starting center Andre Drummond and inserted the 24-year-old into the starting lineup, he had been averaging a near double-double, with 22.8 points and 9.9 rebounds per contest, according to CBS Sports.
