We recently wrote about the benefits of logging some miles outside this winter. Cold-weather running is scientifically proven to improve performance (who’s tryna PR?), helps reduce fat linked to heart disease, and offers a much-needed change of pace from the treadmill.

If you’re going to do it, though, you need the proper gear. I went out on a frigid run a few years ago with a big group and watched two guys go down on black ice during the first mile. They were wearing the same sneaks they’d run in in July. No good.

Fortunately, we know the right running sneaker for such situations: the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 36 Shield. Nike often remixes its most popular running shoes to combat wintry elements, and the “shielded” version of the Pegasus adds some serious heft, with a water-repellant armor and a grippier rubber outsole. It’s $53 off right now at JackRabbit (only in black) and sizing is good from 8 through 12.5.
