“What’s the point of buying a supercar?” That’s the main question rational people ask when presented with luxury vehicles like the Lamborghini Huracan, which costs over $200K and can achieve speeds up to 200 miles per hour despite speed limits in the U.S., and even its home country of Italy, never breaking 100. Well, the Italian State Police have an answer.

Last week, Reuters reported that Italian police used a Lamborghini Huracan to race a kidney about 300 miles across the country for an urgent transplant operation. According to The Irish Times, the police drove 500 kilometers from Padua to Rome — a drive that normally takes about six hours — in just two hours. As the Drive noted, the average speed for the delivery was about 145 mph.

“The police stepped in to help when local authorities were unable to deliver the organ quickly enough,” the Times wrote.

Wait a second, the police have a custom Lamborghini in their fleet? They sure do, and it’s called the Huracan Polizia edition. The Italian automaker delivered the latest special-edition vehicle to the department in 2017, one of many the marque has built for law enforcement purposes. But as Lamborghini said at the time, the vehicle’s main function isn’t high-speed chases, but for circumstances such as these: “An essential task of the Huracán Polizia is to provide medical assistance. To this end, the luggage compartment at the front of the vehicle hosts a special refrigeration system for the urgent transport of organs to be transplanted.”

As you can see in a video the State Police posted on Twitter, the kidney went in the refrigerated front truck before being raced across the country.
