Washington Redskins Trade Kirk Cousins for Chiefs QB Alex Smith

But did they get the better end of the deal?

Did Washington make the right call by getting rid of Kirk Cousins and adding Alex Smith? The Kansas City trade leaves Washington with an older quarterback and one less rising defensive player. Cousins was going to cost at least $5 million more per year through 2022, and it was not guaranteed that he would have signed with the team once he became a free agent. But Peter King writes for Sports Illustrated, that Washington is not better on opening day with Smith than it would have been with Cousins. This deal made Washington four years older and they lost a rising young cornerback, Kendall Fuller, and a third-round pick in 2018. Plus, other than quarterbacks, “there are no more valuable players in today’s football than versatile corners.”
