On Friday, December 7, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation says they launched three satellites into space from the Plessezk Cosmodrome in northwestern Russia.
According to a Business Insider report, two additional unknown objects were also spotted hurling into space. This isn’t the first time Russia has launched something up into space with no explanation. Unidentified objects were included in a separate launch in 2014.
Satellites can be used as weapons, something the Russian military knows all too well. During the Cold War the Soviet Union launched a satellite killer project with a goal to upset national security in other countries. However, with the collapse of the Soviet Union came the closure of the project.
Russian liberal news magazine Kommersant reports that the launch on December 7 was merely a decoy because the real satellite was not ready for launch.
