Between 2014-2017, female-led films outperformed male-led movies at the worldwide box office, Variety reports.
The group behind the study, led by former Sony Pictures Chairman Amy Pascal, shift7 CEO Megan Smith, producer Liza Chasin, as well as CAA agent Alexandra Trustman and actress Geena Davis, aims to “improve the portrayal of women in media and entertainment,” explains Variety.
The study found that female-led films earned more than male-led films across every budget level. In order to be eligible for the study, each film had to pass the Bechdel Test. The Bechdel Test searches for three things: the film must have at least three women in it, two women speak to each other in the film, and the conversation they have cannot be about a man.
Research showed that every film that made more than $1 billion at the global box office passed the Bechdel Test. One of the top female-led films of the year was Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot, which made $821 million world-wide.
“The truth is that seeing women and girls on screen is not only good for everyone, especially our children. It’s also good entertainment and good business.” Davis told to Variety.
