A newly discovered creature is being named after Donald Trump. The amphibian, which is blind, buries its head in the ground. The little legless creature was found in Panama.
The naming rights for the creature were auctioned off to raise money for the Rainforest Trust and won by EnviroBuild boss Aidan Bell. The scientists who discovered the ten centimeter-long animal have agreed to use the name when they publish their findings.
The name was given to the amphibian after Trump’s response to the US government’s climate report was “I don’t believe it.”
These shiny, little animals are especially susceptible to global warming and are in danger of becoming extinct. It’s important for people to protect the world’s environment. “Protecting the world’s remaining rainforests is acknowledged as one of the most effective ways to mitigate climate change, yet every day nearly 70,000 acres of rainforest are destroyed forever. This destruction is not only one of the main causes of climate change, but it is also having a devastating impact on endangered wildlife, indigenous communities and the planet’s weather patterns,” explained Chris Redston, executive director of Rainforest Trust UK.
The Dermophis donaldtrumpi is blind to its surroundings and buries itself in the sand. “It is the perfect name,” Bell told The Guardian. “Caecilian is taken from the Latin caecus meaning ‘blind’, perfectly mirroring the strategic vision President Trump has consistently shown towards climate change.”
