Spider-Man Heads Back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Sony and Disney reach an agreement after a brief split earlier this summer

Remember when Disney and Sony announced that they would no longer co-produce films featuring the adventures of Spider-Man? For those who enjoy watching a certain arachnid-themed superhero teaming up with the likes of the Avengers and Dr. Strange (people like, well, me), it was disappointing news — not the least because the MCU version of Peter Parker was closely tied in with the series’s larger continuity.

As it turns out, the two sides in the disagreement have now reached an agreement, and a third Spider-Man film is set to hit theaters on July 16, 2021. Star Tom Holland had perhaps the best reaction, taking to Instagram to post a clip from a popular film featuring a protagonist with roots on Long Island whose unpredictable adventures take him all over the world.

Disney is rumored to be collecting 25% of the box office for the third film in the series, as compared with 5% for the previous iterations. The division of profits had been a sticking point for the two companies beforehand, which led to the brief split. For fans of superhero-themed films, though, this is fantastic news. And it also increases the possibility that Tom Holland will perform intricate dance routines to more Rihanna songs, which is never a bad thing.

The third Spider-Man film will be co-produced by Sony’s Amy Pascal and Disney’s Kevin Feige, who is also producing a forthcoming Star Wars film. And for those who prefer the Miles Morales version of Spider-Man, a sequel to the Morales-centric Into the Spider-Verse is also in the works. Will one of these films, like the comics, team Spider-Man with Frog-Man to fight the Walrus? Stay tuned, true believers.
