Black Panther still won’t be released for another two and a half weeks, but excitement for the film is clear. Advanced ticket sales for the movie have surpassed all other superhero movies at the same point in the sales cycle. The title character, who leads the fictional African nation of Wakanda as King T’Challa and doubles as his realm’s superhero protector, was first introduced during Captain America: Civil War, which came out in 2016. But in comics, his roots stretch back through decades. The former advanced sales champion was Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It was not a well-received movie, but it brought together the world’s most famous superheroes on the big screen for the first time. However, Black Panther is a trailblazer. The character debuted in 1966, and was Marvel’s first black superhero. This film will be the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film with a majority-black cast. According to EW, Fandango surveyed Black Panther ticket buyers about why they’re so excited, and more than 90 percent of respondents said they’re “looking forward to a different kind of superhero movie” and “looking forward to the film’s positive messages.” Black Panther finally hits theaters Feb. 16.
