Politico embarrassed the Wall Street Journal by publishing a full transcript of the Journal’s July 25 Oval Office interview with President Trump, according to the Columbia Journalism Review. The Journal has reportedly faced accusations that it’s been too subdued in its coverage of President Trump, and this latest transcript raises additional questions about the seemingly chummy relationship between editor-in-chief Gerard Baker and the president.

Baker has reportedly appeared “defensive” in his previous responses to this type of criticism, and reportedly told his staff to seek employment elsewhere if they were unhappy with the way the Journal covers the president.

A Journal spokesperson told Politico the newspaper is “proud of the on-the-record interview we conducted with President Trump, which produced multiple, newsworthy articles.”

“We published the noteworthy excerpts from the interview. We saw no reason to publish the crosstalk that inevitably accompanies any conversation,” the spokesperson reportedly said.
