The hurricane slammed into Florida early Sunday with the eye of the storm making landfall in the Keys just after 9 a.m.

The Miami Herald is tracking the devastation and reported that more than a million people are already without power in South Florida. Tens of thousands of evacuees are huddled in shelters as the storm moves their way.

Irma hits Florida as a Category 4 storm—previously the most powerful hurricane ever recorded with a peak wind speed of 185 mph measured last week. At least 20 people were killed across the Caribbean before the storm turned towards the Sunshine State.

The hurricane has since been downgraded to a Category 1 storm.
