Well, it was nice in theory.
At Samsung’s annual Unpacked event on Wednesday, the tech giant showed off a new line of Galaxy S10 phones as well as (finally) the $1,980 Galaxy Fold, its long-rumored foldable smartphone.
What we learned:
- The Fold is 4.6 inches when shut and 7.3 inches in tablet form
- It opens, book-like, on a hinge, though it appears to offer a fairly seamless screen in tablet form
- As a tablet, it’ll be able to run three apps simultaneously
- It’s available in four colors, and the folding hinge can be customized
- Some specs: 12GB of RAM, 512GB of memory, two internal batteries and six cameras (three in back, two selfie, one on the cover)
- Nobody knows how thick it will be, but it could be as robust as a Nintendo Switch (14mm)
- It’s just two months from release (April 26), but nobody outside of Samsung has seen the phone up close
Those last two nuggets of info seem to show how little faith Samsung has in the Fold — the $2,000 phone might just be a grand proof of concept that others (probably Apple) will refine and improve in the near future, and only suited for early adopters.
