Tiger Woods Is Prepping for the British Open with an Unusual Morning Routine

He's taken a page out of the Mark Wahlberg playbook

On Thursday, July 18, the PGA Tour heads to Northern Ireland for the British Open at Royal Portrush. It’s the 148th Open Championship, and as always, will be played on a challenging coastal links course. Most golfers on the tour are already over in the UK, getting the double bogeys out of their system in similar links tournaments like the Irish Open.

But at least one of them is still Stateside, preparing in a slightly different manner.

According to a (now expired) Instagram story posted yesterday by Nike, Tiger Woods has spent the last however-many days waking up at 1 a.m. in an effort to adjust his internal clock to Northern Ireland’s local time, which is five hours ahead.

Why is Tiger waking up to workout an hour before even Mark Wahlberg has lifted his first dumbbell? Apparently he prefers to practice ahead of the Open at his home course in South Florida, The Medalist, instead of preparing in the UK, but is also intent on avoiding any jet lag next week.

Regardless of whether this method ultimately works — and helps Tiger take home his second improbable major of the year — it’s a nice reminder of the sheer psychosis required to be a superstar athlete in today’s age. The sun sets around 8:15 p.m. in July in South Florida, and Tiger is a documented insomniac, so we’re not convinced this is the best idea of all time. That said, Tiger’s been known to surprise us before.
